Gulfstream aerospace

Soon after first release of our intranet, InsideGulfstream, I began drafting wireframes to update the UI (I couldn’t help myself). We had spent almost 3 years from design to launch, which meant it was already a little outdated. Employees needs had also changed, with more people have access to mobile devices and engaging with each other on this new platform. These were important factors that informed my designs.

These were my initial mockups for the home page, designed in Sketch.

These are shots of the live site after launch in January 2019.

Desktop version

The majority of our users are employees visiting the site from their laptops or desktops. So I wanted to make the most use of the real estate without it feeling cluttered. It was also important to allow for the articles to have a more graphical and modern feel.

Tablet size

Optimized for mobile

Though I used this opportunity to update the style, the main goal was to optimize the layout for mobile devices. A lot of care was put into the wireframes to make sure each individual widget was able to scale down to smaller phone screens.

There were a few more elements that were accounted for. I also simplified and updated the footer based on user behaviors that I gathered from analytics and observation.

Updated Navigation

The company is large and layered so I wanted to refresh this menu based on observations I gathered from users over the previous 2 years. I opted for a flyout menu to replace the existing mega menu to allow users to better see where they were navigating.

Details

This is my favorite feature (selfishly, because it’s a bit of a deep cut). It’s essentially a quick launch menu of the most used items on our intranet. I really like how it turned out with the color and the subtle opacity.
